Drivers run the risk of prosecution for illegal calls
Thousands of drivers across the UK risk the threat of prosecution every day for using mobile phones whilst driving.
And the problem is not just confined to the general public. Recent high profile news stories have revealed that celebrities such as Jeremy Clarkson and footballer Ashley Cole are also guilty of using mobile handsets whilst at the wheel.
Bluetooth headsets manufacturer Jabra recently questioned over 2,000 people in the UK to find out what people think about using a mobile phone while driving.
The survey revealed that 93% of motorists are aware that using a handset while at the wheel without a headset could now be treated as dangerous driving and carry a prison sentence of up to two years.
This illustrates that the messages communicated by Government and safety watchdogs has been getting across. What came as a surprise, however, is that 68% of British motorists think that the penalties for such offences are actually too lenient and should be more severe.
The report went on to reveal that this call for "tougher punishments" is being driven by the fact that more than half of respondents had at one point or another felt endangered by fellow road users on their mobiles whilst driving.
One way that motorists can avoid the threat of prosecution is by using Bluetooth phone headsets.
Apparently, 62% of drivers are planning to do just that, with a further 20% saying that they'd considered buying Bluetooth phone headsets, or other hands-free equipment to avoid going to prison.
Andrew Doyle, Jabra's UK Sales Director commented:
"This survey highlights the fact that although the majority of the population now know about the Driving Legislation, many feel harsher penalties are needed for those that continue to risk lives by ignoring the law. In today's stressful and busy lifestyle the need to use the phone whilst driving is a reality and drivers must remember that if they have to use the phone, to do it handsfree"
Gary Basso of Big Box Shop, exclusive suppliers of Jabra Bluetooth phone headsets had this to say: “Bluetooth headsets are a great solution for people who need to talk on the move, whether it be in the car, in the office or on the street. We are proud to supply the best Bluetooth headsets and are committed to encouraging safe driving practices.”
